Poulan Pro (PR625) ... Southwest Wisconsin

Last weekend we had granddaughters overnight. This weekend we had their little brother. Always enjoyable when grand kids are here.

When we took Archer home Saturday afternoon I picked up Poulan PR625 self propelled mower given to me in trade for Toro mower.

Had time this week during rain storms to do some work on it.
    • Air cleaner was filthy. Probably reason why fuel was being blown past primer bulb.
    • Ordered tuneup kit; spark plug, air filter, primer bulb, attaching ring, carbureator, gasket, and o-ring. $22, will let you know quality of carb for this price.
    • Removed rear wheels and greased bushings/axle shafts so it rolles easier.
    • Was told belt slipped and drive not working.
      • inside of front wheels has plastic gearing
      • each side has drive gear transmission shaft
      • The transmission rotates so when operator squeezes transmission lever the drive gear engages the gearing in the wheel.
      • Gearing in both wheels are gone. Drive gears are worn.
      • Replacing wheel and gear on each side; $30 per side.

Will include photos when I have parts and project is completed.

FYI ... Poulan is an American manufactured product. Engine is Briggs & Stratton (model 122T05). Hadn't been run in 2-3 years. Fired on first pull. Started on second with fresh gas. Need to figure out how to elevate handle, too low for me to operate.

One of my few non-green machines is a Poulan Pro walk behind. When I moved 6 years ago to a city lot I sold my 420 and got this mower for $25 on a auction. Came with a bagger, mulcher and side, I had to replace the cable for the safety shutoff but other than that been using it for 6 years (gas, oil, cleaner air filter too of course). Been using the 455 a little more lately, but starts right up everytime.

I have ordered about $80 in parts for this mower. My son questioned why I did so because he only paid $120 for it new.

Why you ask? Because I can. I am not from the throw away generation. As a baby boomer that was the way I was brought up on our family farm. If you could fix it you did. What was amazing about this mower was I diagnosed these issues in about 10 minutes (after I pressure washed it). It is a very easy machine to work on. It is the high rear wheel version which will work well at my rural property. As for longevity, that will have to be determined.

Gabby the math still works out, now if you had to order $250 in parts to fix a $120 mower I would question your Math skills!

Mower is a Poulan Pro 625 high rear wheel self propelled, with belt driven front wheels and electric start

    • model 96142000038 01
    • s/n 021308M 005815

    Engine is Briggs & Stratton
    • model 122T05-3845-B1
    • s/n 07020657

Son estimates he bought mower new 10 years ago. It has not been used since August 2018. That is when he borrowed my Toro. He claimed mower would not stay running and drive belt was slipping.

Drive belt was found to be in good condition. Did not replace. Instead the gearing in the front wheels were highly worn. The drive gears also showed some wear and probably did not need to be replaced but for $4.13 each side I decided to replace them. Wheels were about $25 a piece.

    Simple replacement

    1. Use screwdriver to pry off wheel cover
    2. 9/16 wrench to remove flange nut
    3. With wheel off you will see drive gear retained with e-clip ... remove with screwdriver ... install with pliers.
    4. Photo not focused well but with gear removed you will see pin through shaft that engages and drives the gear
    5. I applied light coat of grease on each shaft and reassembled.
    6. Done in less than 15 minutes

Rear wheels are similar disassembly/assembly except wheel cover is removed by reaching backside of wheel and releasing tabs that hold the cover on the wheel.

Changed engine oil. Cleaned air cleaner.

3 pumps on primer bulb and the mower starts on 1st pull. As for mower not staying running I have ordered tuneup kit with new spark plug, air filter, primer bulb, carburetor with 0-ring and gasket. Has not arrived yet. Definitely needs air cleaner. Will retain other parts until it is proven they are needed to resolve running issue.

Operator Manual shows two holes in handle for low/high operating position. This mower does not have this feature. I need to figure a way to raise the handle. Very uncomfortable in current position.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I tested the drive when I had mower running. Drive works perfectly. Did not work at all before I replaced parts.

    Nice work Gabby!

Glad you used 2 jacks to support that mower I'm not sure 1 would have held the weight! LOL!

Used the jacks to elevate it while I sat in a chair. Was going to use 4 but figured I only needed to hold the front of the mower in elevated position. Also was lighter than lifting it onto the tailgate of the pickup.

I'm a gen X, but I still believe in fixing and strongly against this throw away mentality. I do benefit from it, I buy most my Deere's needing a little work for a discount.

I seem to be very much alone as it seems most of my friend can't figure out anything or have the tools to do so.

I do seem to be running low on time lately, I keep thinking when my kids are older I will have more time. But it doesn't seem to be working out that way.

Biscuit 1, I do have a fairly good size herd. Majority came from a collection I bought from a member. Nine tractors in collection along with multiple decks, snow throwers, and random attachments/parts.

    1. 1967 112 RF (from collection) ... was in running condition but refresh in process
    2. 1967 110 RF (from collection) ... SOLD ... was running ... buyer took 39 deck but not tiller ... still have tiller for sale.
    3. 1968 60 (from collection) ... non-running complete tractor ... for sale (not to scrapper) with mower deck and snow thrower
    4. 1970 120 (from collection) ... SOLD ... in running original condition
    5. 1972 110 SF (from collection) ... SOLD ... with Haban sickle mower
    6. 1972 112 SF (from collection) ... was running but refresh in process ... electric lift
    7. 1972 112 SF (from collection) ... no engine, hood or sheet metal ... rear wheels were rotted from calcium chloride w/o tube use ... parted out
    8. 1973 70 (from collection) ... non-running tractor ... no engine ... for sale (preferred not to be scrapped) ... have mower deck and snow blower
    9. 1973 140 H3 (from collection) ... as purchased condition ... not running ... refresh planned
    10. 1977 300 ... was in running condition but refresh in process
    11. 1978 316K ... SOLD ... with 47 deck and 33 tiller
    12. 1979 314 ... Running (at rural property)
    13. 1979 317 ... Refreshed running tractor ... in town general purpose ... my money pit tractor
    14. 1979 216 ... Fully restored with restored deck and model 31 tiller ... have original condition 37a snow thrower ... for sale
    15. 1983 318 ... refresh in process
    16. 1986 318 ... with partial cab ... is my tractor set to use frt quick hitch for broom, blade, and model 47 snow blower
    17. 1987 332 ... SOLD ... with 44 loader
    18. 1987 175 ... was considered marital property ... went with house
    19. 1987 185 ... SOLD ... with 46" deck, bagger, and 38 snow blower.
    20. 1988 420 ... Bought with intention to refresh ... possible repower ... haven't had time to look at ... been stealing parts off of for other tractors.
    21. 1990 318 ... SOLD ... refreshed tractor with fully restored 50" deck and model 49 snow thrower
    22. 2004 X485 ... my rural property mowing machine
    23. 2007 X300 ... SOLD ... with 43" deck and bagger
    24. 2010 X720 ... my in town mowing machine

Looks like I am down to 16 tractors with a bunch of attachments and parts that I collected since January 2013 when I retired from Deere.

Tony, if you want free time ... stay working.
