I picked up a 40 loader for my 445 yesterday, and think I've figured out how to hook most of it, though had a few questions still.

There's a warning sticker on the loader that says it's necessary to install a transaxle hydrostatic transmission pressure relief valve prior to operating, or else I will damage the transmission.

I'm not finding relief valve for the 40 loader for a 445 in the jdparts web sight. I'm wondering if I'm not looking in the right place, or if a 445 doesn't need it?

Also, while looking at my technical manual, I saw reference to a shut off valve, which I presume is to shut off the deck lifter going up and down
while operating the loader. I don't see one of these on my 445. I'm wondering if this is a separate purchase item. Not sure if I need it.
Part of me thinks that I might get more power to the loader if the deck is not going up and down. Further, since I was thinking I would put suitcase weights on a bracket on my three-point hitch, power would be wasted lifting the weights. What do you think?

The plugs aren't color labeled on the loader (no covers). I think I figured out from hydraulic schematic in the manual that yellow-gray is a pair
and green-black is the other auxiliary pair. I'm guessing that if I reverse the pair when I plug in the loader (like green-black to black-green) it won't matter, other than the fact the control will be backwards, right?

Thanks for your help,
Dave

Dave, I have a 40 on my 455, and you'll need the same setup.

You do need the relief valve and the replacement control rod that goes with it - these are typically sold with the loader, so if you bought from a private seller, maybe you could swap. One person on this forum tried to do without the loader-specific valve, and needed a new transaxle in short order - you don't want to be the second. If the seller does not have it, any dealer should be able to get the valve for you - I like going to WFM site sponsor KeepingItGreen.com (see ad above) who I am sure will be helpful.

The shut off valve does indeed keep the deck and 3-point from going up and down with the bucket tilt. If you have the valve, you'll have a T-handle on the valve block under the left footboard. If you don't have the valve, it will not affect power, but will affect lift speed as the rockshaft cylinder will have to run through its travel before the bucket starts to move.

You won't hurt anything if you have the hydraulic connections wrong, but it's supposed to be bucket on top lever, boom on bottom, and both levers pull back to lift, push forward to drop.

Dave, the valve Tim refers to lowers the maximum pressure of the transaxle in the forward direction. Here is the text from the service manual.

IMPORTANT: The 40 loader is shipped complete
with a hydrostatic pressure relief valve which
must be installed in place of the tractor
transaxle forward control valve. The relief valve
limits the peak hydrostatic pressures in the
transaxle. This protects the transaxle from
unnecessary stress for longer life. Operation of
a front end loader on a tractor without the
transaxle hydrostatic pressure relief valve will
void the tractor warranty. If a 40 loader is taken
off one tractor and used on another, or another
brand of loader is used, it is important that the
loader tractor be equipped with the transaxle
relief valve.

One more thing that needs to be changed is the free wheeling control lever as the new pressure relief valve is a bit higher.

Tim, David Bob, Thanks for taking the time. I really appreciate all the information.

After first reading Tim's note yesterday morning, I went to my local dealer to find a relief valve. They weren't able to find the part right away. It looked like they were referencing a parts blow out catalog that may have been the same one I looked at on-line through the JD dealer, which comes up with the part for 44 loaders and older tractors. He said that if I had the product ID number (think he meant serial number), he could access a different catalog with more detailed information. So I'll go back today and see what I can find. Otherwise, I might try your suggestion Tim, of KeepingItGreen.

Bob, I think you're talking about the lever between the rear right tire and the transaxle against the frame that allow's one to push the tractor when the engine isn't running. Is that right?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, that's correct about the control lever - it's the one that let's you push the tractor for short distances.

Note (F) on page 5 of the attachment compatibility chart gives the part numbers for the valve and lever.

Chart: http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/96042/400series-96201.pdf

Give KeepingItGreen a call - their prices are better than my local dealer, enough that the difference pays for shipping. And you won't be burning gas going back and forth to the dealer and not coming home with what you need.

Thanks Tim, that reference is a big help. I went back earlier this morning and we weren't able to find the part number again. The suggestion was possibly going with a universal part from Northern Hydraulic or some such if we could get the spec... but with your reference, I should be able to order the actual JD Part. In case someone searches WFM archive later and that link isn't good, the two part numbers for 425/445/455 are: AM121248 and M121509

I see that relief valve goes for $265, while that lever is $9. I can see why you suggested trying to contact the person I bought it from to get that.
