I have searched the archive for information on the throttle shaft replacement and it seems pretty straight forward. However, the throttle shaft in this carburetor does not match the dimensions for the Kohler kit 25-757-16. I took my actual dimensions and they are on the drawing below. The carb is a Kohler #30 A237490. My throttle shaft is also painted green all along the full length. Why, I don't know. At first I thought it was a varnish build up, but it is actually paint! With this oddity in mind what carb rebuild kit do I need, 25-757-01-S? I can't seem to figure out the online Kohler carb manual. I also need a new float and possibly a choke shaft.

Well, I have everything apart and cleaned up but I still cannot determine the correct throttle shaft repair kit. I almost think this carb was put together with parts, not necessarily the correct ones from several others. The number on the high speed needle (237489) is not listed in the Kohler carb manual. The choke plate also has a smaller spring loaded plate on it. Any ideas or help will be appreciated.

Thanks Bob,

I've looked at those before, that's why I have an odd ball carb. I need the shaft as well. I e-mailed Brian Miller but haven't had a reply yet. His web site says he is in the process of moving so that's probably why. Here are a couple of photos of the choke plate at I refered to in my previous post.

Mike,

Looks like the Carter carb I have from a very old case tractor judging by the choke plate. That 237489 # is 23-748-9. I don't know if that will help though. I have a shaft that is painted also. Don't know why it is. Maybe to take up some slop between the shaft and it's bearings. The rebuild kit you asked about should work on your carb. It is a basic kit that has all the common parts in a Kohler carb. If you get the bushing, you shouldn't need a new shaft because the bushing lets the shaft ride on a different part of the shaft instead of the worn part. Don't know why you would need a new choke shaft. If they're a little sloppy it shouldn't matter since they are just used to start the engine.

Thanks for the info Bob, I don't believe this is the original carb to my tractor. I have two motors with it. The original motor has a broken connecting rod. The motor that is currently in the tractor came from an early 140 H1 my dad bought as a parts tractor. I had thought he just changed over the motor and kept the original carb, but this seems to not be the case. I ordered the 25-757-16 throttle shaft kit since it is the closest to the shaft I have. My only concern is the fit of the throttle plate. I also can't find a part number for the throttle plate. There doesn't seem to be a parts manual that has a complete breakdown of all the carb parts.

The green isn't paint. It is a Teflon coating. It lubricates the pivots. It takes longer to wear out the bores.

Dimitar, thanks for the info. I installed the throttle shaft from kit 25-757-16. This shaft is a little shorter overall than the old one, but is actually a better fit. The lever makes better contact with the idle screw. The bushing as supplied in the kit was a little too large. I felt that a .007" interference fit was too much stress for a press fit in an aluminum body, so I turned the bushing OD down slightly for a .0015" fit and put a small chamfer on one end and used green cylinder Locktite.

I picked up this LX178 Motorsport model for $50.00 today. This is the good side of the hood. The hood is in bad shape and there is a little fire damage to the front of the engine. I think it developed a fuel leak and the fire melted some of the plastic on the top of the engine.
I don't think I can go wrong for $50.00.

I'd say that was a steal for fifty bucks! I never knew there was a motorsport edition, was this from the era of the John Deere sponsored Nascar team?

We have a STX38 Motorsports edition...never seen a LX178 or Lt133...very cool! Jim, are there any other Motorsports stickers or designations on your LX178? Pretty neat find right down to the key chain. Are you going to put it all back in order or?

There is a small Motor Sports sign on the dash that is unique to these tractors.

No. I will not fix it up. The parts prices are too high...upper and lower hood, front bumper, all the melted engine parts. I just finished stripping it down for salvage parts today. My intentions from the get-go was to part it out.

Jim, by the way, LX 178's weren't supposed to be sold with 48 mower decks, only LX 188's at the time. Deere re-jetted LX 178's carbs 2 more hp. to become LX 188's. They were usually sold with 48 decks. Just FYI. Yes, boring but true.
