I took the spindles out of the front axle on my 1973 140 H1 today expecting to see bushings in them, but it appears the spindles ride directly in the axle housing. The parts book shows bushings for the early model 140's bus not for the +30,000 serial number units. If the spindles have some play, how do I tighten them up if there are no bushings?

Leonard,

You are correct, no bushings in the axle with 1" spindles. I have seen more often than not, the ware is on the spindles and not the axle beam itself. Take a look at your spindles at the axle end and see if they are worn there.

My 140 has a bit of spindle ware that will need to be addressed soon as it has negative camber on both sides. I think that I will try to find a good pair to replace mine with or may have to cut mine down to 3/4" on the axle end and bush the axle ???

Leonard,

My front axle is worn exactly the same way. The spindles themselves have very little wear, its the bore in the axle. I was going to have it machined out and press in a new steel bushing, but decided to wait and make it a future project. My spindles also have vertical play as well, so I'm just going to machine a thrust washer to take up this play.

BTW While I had the front axle off I replaced the mounting bolt bushings as well as the bolt. The new bushings from JD were oversized in outside diameter and needed to be turned down for a good press fit, likewise the bolt hole bore needed to be reamed for a good slip fit of the bolt. I'm not sure that all the 140's would need this done, but mine did.

Leonard,
For what it's worth I had the same problem with wear on the axle bore. I brought it to a machine shop had them bore it out to match sleeves that they had on hand with a inside bore of 1". Quick and cheap fix. Tightened up the front end and felt like I had put in new steering components:)

Good Luck

I have a 93 455 with 26x12x12 terra trencher tires that I want to put chains on for the winter, but it does not have enough clearance with the seat pan.

I only see a couple options.

1. Cut out the fenders
2. Raise the seat pan if it can be done

What are your thoughts?

I was hoping that was not the case as these are 8 ply tires and really hard to remove from the rim. Also the original turf tires are only 23 inches not 26 inches.

Do you know if the seat pan can be shimmed up to give more clearance.

My 455 is 2 wheel steer. I heard that the early production 455’s came with 23 inchers and the factory had to cut open the fenders when the 26 inch tires were used.

I guess separate tires are an option, but was hoping to use one set all year.

Guess I will check for another set of rims.

Off hand do you know if there are wider rims available for the 455. I was considering increasing the rim and tire width from the standard 12" to 14" or more if the tractor can take it.
