Did a little mid-week Deere hunting.

Found a '73 140 H1 that has turning brakes and the clutch -- when did the H1's have only one brake pedal, and what year was the clutch discontinued? I thought that the clutch was only on the earlier models...

Here are some pictures. It has a very sound model 48 deck, dirty but not much in the way of rust. The side views show all three pedals, and note that the deck belt makes a good hood tie down when pedals are on both sides of the tractor.

The tractor was fairly complete, but the seat was not on this tractor (actually it was a green pan seat that had been rather unceremoniously and crudely bolted to the still working Jacobson mower that was in the same equipment yard -- no sign of the springs though.

Turner and Brandon,

Yes, it is a pretty straight tractor -- too bad they scavenged the seat off it. I would have liked it to have been an H3, but the church camp that was getting rid of it did not have any idea of which model it was when I called, so I just boogied over there. Brandon, you got my good barn find H3 last year -- did it get fixed up? Haven't seen any pictures of it posted here...

The ad said "selling where is as is, call before we take it to the recycle" and even though it was just south of me in Canby Oregon, the phone number was an Indiana area code...seems that the volunteers doing the work on this retreat property are mostly from out of state.

That H3 I got from you got sold,it was a good running and driving 140, everything seemed to work as it should on it, the money from it went towards the JD 4110 I bought and sold.

So do you think this 140 will run? Keep us all posted with the progress on it.

Chuck,
I think all 140s have the single left pedal. It's just that some (early) years only the H3s have the dual brakes on the right side. My '72 H1 had only the left clutch/brake pedal (has since been converted to right side brakes), while my '73 H1 has all three pedals.

Joe,

Thanks for the info -- most of my somewhat limited experience with the Deere line is in the 300 series.

Brandon, the PO folks at the church retreat indicated that the issues were mostly electrical (my specialty...
) and that it had not run in several years, but maybe I can get it running soon after my trip next week. I will have to see just how much it needs...there is a three day weekend coming up after all.
