I have a 140 H3 that didn't have a front PTO. I purchased a used one, installed it and turned the key to the run position and it engages with the switch. Think great final a working PTO. Button everything back up to start it and it won't turn over, the starter engages, but once is goes to turn over engine the starter locks up. You have to take off the starter for it to retract. Tried this multiple times. Removed the PTO and it works perfectly, starter engages turns the engine over and starts. Any suggestions as to why the PTO would kill the starter and not allow it to turn over engine? PTO bearings spin free.

I Think you have it wired wrong. Should only have power when running not when the key is on - if I remember correctly. Did you check a diagram against what you have.

Dom-
If you flip the switch with the key in the run position you will be able to here the coil engage. The run position is no different than running on these tractors.

Little-
Have you checked the air gap on the front PTO? Either way something with the front PTO is binding and the starter is not able to overcome it.

what i think dom is saying is that the pto should only have power in the run position and not in the start but im not sure because if the pto switch is on and u try to start it it should not crank-unless your safety switchs are bypassed

Did some more trouble shooting tonight. With the PTO connected I got the starter turning the motor over but no starting. Took the PTO off and it started instantly. I think that I am going to replace the ground wire. It seemed that when it was cranking over with the PTO mounted it seemed like it didn't have spark.
