So I recently picked up a 1969 140 got the engine running and I tried out the transmission. It tries to move but doesn't quite have enough power to go and it makes a grinding/whining noise. I changed the filter and fluid with no change at all. Any ideas where to go from here I don't know much about hydrostatic transmissions at all but I'm hoping someone has ideas.

you need to check the fluid level, there should not be any grinding noises but it could be cavitation you are hearing if low

also check the freewheel/bypass valve on the top of the pump. you should see the t handle under the seat.

I think you want it screwed all the way in to drive on an early 140 sn<30,000, but hopefully someone else will confirm

Brakes dragging locked up?

Could jack both wheels up and spin them. With the diff one will spin backwards the other. But should spin freely since your not turning the hydro with both off the ground.

I have had it jacked up and the wheels spin freely. I had it running while jacked up and the wheels do spin under no load once it is put back on the ground it won't go. I don't know much about hydraulics but it seems like it is not building up enough pressure to move the tractor

Calvin, you may want to remove the fender deck and check the drive line connections from the engine to the hydro-static pump. Sometimes the roll pins in the rag joints come out, or break. That could give you a grinding noise. There might be enough friction to spin the pump with no or light load, but not enough to do so under higher load.

Calvin, perhaps this picture will help you. The roll pins are number 19 in the picture. The rag joint is #23. If you have the fender off and the wheels are on the ground, does the fan keep turning when you try to move the tractor?

Steve's picture is of a newer 140. On a '69, the fan is in front of the hydro, and will turn even if the roll pin is broken. There are two #19 roll pins, but the one right by the fan hub is in question.

I missed that Calvin's machine is a '69. It's good that Cliff caught it. I've had that roll pin break or come out a couple of times, causing the type of trouble that Calvin is experiencing. I now safety tie the roll pin in to keep it from coming out.
