The old 140 has been going strong until mowing the other day when I noticed the oil dripping out from around the oil pan. After not being able to pin point where the leak was actually coming from I pulled the motor back out and found that the oil was actually coming out from in between the fly wheel and the back bearing plate (rear crankshaft seal?). Has anyone ever done one of these before that would be able to give me some advice and maybe even a correct part number for the seal? It has the Kohler K321AS Spec Number 60102A Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks Guys -Andrew

ANDREW - There's actually a couple places that can leak oil so that it drips out between the flywheel and backing plate.

One, as you say, is the oil seal which press fits into the backing plate. Access by simply removing the flywheel.

The other place is through either of the two lower back plate attaching bolts, and for what it's worth, could be either of the two upper bolts too. They do not get tightened that tight to begin with.

But you say the oil was dripping off the oil pan. Which leads me to think it could be the oil pan gasket leaking between the pan and the block. And also, if the four bolts attaching the back plate have gotten loose, the back plate to block gaskets could be leaking also.

ANY Kohler parts dealer, including your JD dealer or any Cub Cadet, Snapper, Ariens, Wheel Horse, etc. dealer will have the oil seal. The 10, 12, 14, & 16 HP all use the same gasket, Kohler # KH-47-032-07.

Hey Dennis, i think you are correct. After digging into it more looks like the two lower bolts on the bearing plate were slightly loose resulting in the oil leaking out from the gaskets. I took it off cleaned everything up and put a small amount of RTV on both mating surfaces. Hopefully this cures the leak. I didnt know if it was acceptable to put RTV on this or not but figured I would give it a try. Re torqued the bolts, put everything back together and I guess we'll see...
