Hey guys,
I have confirmed that my stator in my 1973 140 H3 is bad and will need to replace it. The tractor is a 54590 serial number meaning it must have a 15 amp stator, (from what I am told). Does anyone know that correct part number for one of these stators so that I can get it ordered? Any tips or pointers on this job would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks Andrew

It's likely 47 085 04. You should really check the spec # to make sure you get the correct one.

You can download the parts manual for the K321 from Kohler's web site.

After searching and checking against my motors spec number I ordered the JD stator part number, AM33426. Got it in the mail today and it's nothing like the one I took off, won't even fit in the flywheel. Is there anyway to make this work or do you guys know what the difference between these two is?

Andrew,

I ran into a similar problem like this while building a K321 for a different project. Long story short, it appears that you have a 10 amp stator (old) and a 15 amp stator (new). The flywheel is for a 10 amp stator. The magnets on a flywheel for a 15 amp stator are much more thin than the one in your picture.

You still have many different options, in the idea that you can return the new stator and what ampmeter you have.

1) If you have a "15" ampmeter I would purchase the correct flywheel.

2) If you have a "10" ampmeter I would try to return the 15 amp stator and get the correct 10 amp stator.

These are my findings from what I have experienced.

That's what I thought too after doing some research. I sourced out a flywheel off a 74 140 online which I am picking up this afternoon, hopefully the new stator fits inside of this newer flywheel. I initially tried looking for a new 10amp stator but found that it was discontinued and had absolutely no luck finding one anywhere.
I would assume the tractor has a 15ampmeter in it now as it's a 1973. My guess is that sometime in this tractors life someone put the old 10amp stator and flywheel on it. Only question I have now is after switching this tractor back to the correct 15amp stator and flywheel will this effect my regulator/rectifier?

Yes it needs to be changed to the correct/matching rectifier. The stator plug should match the rectifier.

I don't know if a 10 stator would work with a 15 rectifier. Pretty sure opposite combo will let all the smoke out.
