Ken,

Hello Neighbor.

Pre 10,000 serial numbers came with what was termed a “Breaker-Type Ignition System”. This was a flywheel-magneto-alternator system. The ignition coil was mounted in an assembly along with the stator, with a high tension lead running to the spark plug.

It sounds like someone may have disconnected the magneto coil (possibly no longer working – and possibly NLA) and rewired the system to another type of ignition system - probably the more common battery ignition system used on 30,001 serial numbers and higher. This would use the more common externally mounted 12v coil along with the already existing condenser, and point setup.

Ken,

You are welcome. If you have any other questions, please let us know. And thank you for your admiration on my herd.

This site has rejuvenated my longtime interest in the older Green & Yellow (not to overlook the custom colors) L&G machines. Plenty of fine tractors and attachments here. But best of all, the great knowledge and experience of all the members is invaluable. Everyday, I learn something new.

I fully understand, my “workers” the 83’ 318 & the 74’ 140 are also rode hard and put away wet with just an occasional cleaning.

My remaining herd I like too think is slowly improving with age.
