Tonite I started disassembling my '70 140 dash to replace the dash decal. I didn't know the column had to come out to remove that large grommet. I've been going thru the service manual. It gives a detailed description of one method, then gives another method with really basic instructions. There must be a a catch. which is the preferred method? I kind of like the second method (out from under the tractor) because I don't to have to pull that one support and have screw heads showing on my new dash) but there doesn't seem to be much room down there. I wish I'd thought about this before I put the engine back in, but that ship sailed several months ago.

If it's any help, I didn't get far with EITHER method. Since I was buying a new steering gear anyway, I took a sawzall and cut off the column just above the dash. Then it was (relatively) easy to extract the lower part from the tractor frame.

George, it worked! Last night it was solid. If I had pried on it too much it would've cracked. Just a few seconds with the heat gun and it popped right out. Now that same heat gun is loosening the old decal (and a little paint) Much easier than I thought it could be. Thanks!
