My dad and I have been thinking about purchasing a John Deere 140 H3 for sale locally. The tractors run well, does not smoke, and the transmission seems to be in good shape. The body is ok; the guy chopped up some of the wiring to install an alternator on it to change the battery. It works well, but we would like to put it back original if we purchased it. The unique thing about it is the tractor is a 1968 with a serial number in the 5000. It has an ok mover deck. He is asking $450. Is this a reasonable price for this tractor? Does the fact that it was the first year made make any difference in the value? Any opinions would be well appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil

Hey Phil...Go For It (that's a GREAT PRICE). I suspect that the owner installed an alternator because the stator (which recharges the battery)probably became worn out. There are many guys here who have installed new stators on Kohler motors, so you can get plenty of help putting yours back into it's original shape...Elliott
