I bought a 79 317 and I got a 9/1978 owners guide with it and its amazing that the 79's are missing the heat shield between the battery and engine. Also I notice that they have the fuel shutoff valve next to the hydro filter. I backed it up by looking in the book as well and sure enough its omitted in the book as well. Was this just for the 79's?

I must not have had a 79? Everyone I've seen had a shield between the battery and engine. It's just from the battery tray and up, not full length like the 318.

Only the very early '79s. The '79 317 has a serial number range 95,001 - 120,000, and JDparts shows a break at # 100836. It shows a small piece before that number, and the regular 317 shield after the break.
