JR I'm sure your savvy and determination will completely tame that "beast" before long, sounds as though your nocturnal musings have found a solution to your most immediate problem with it. ~Cheers~

Andy,

I have a 317 that I have run with both a sleve hitch and three point hitch. I found the sleeve hitch was easier to use and plowed equally to the three point. As an estimate on cost of each setup I would say $400-500 would get you into a good complete sleeve hitch (hitch, rod, and plow) where you could spend $500+ more to get a good 3 point setup (hitch, plow and don't forget rear hydraulic kit for most tractors). The three point is nice to have on the back to show off but the sleve hitch is hard to beat for simplicity and cost.

Hello does anyone know what the small keyed shaft on the upper side of a 77 400 rear end is for .I just finished restoring my 400 and noticed it when the tank was off.

Also does anyone have a rear weight recommended for snow plowing.

Thanks and happy holidays Mark

"Kevin I believe at least the gear boxes are different as the mower PTO runs at different RPMs. Roger"

Seems to me that they are both 2,000 RPM. I have heard, but never felt like trying to confirm, that the output on the gearboxes was opposite.

Adam K.,

You could place a wanted ad on this web site, look on for sale lists on this and other sites, eBay almost always has all these components for auction, visit local junk and flea markets, etc. There are several used equipment dealers in your state. Joes outdoor power is a very good one who is on eBay and has walk in available. He sometimes posts on this site. If you find one locally it is to your advantage due to the freight costs on these heavy items. Good luck on your search, something will turn up for you.

Roger,

The rear pto on the 400 is rated at 840 rpm. Alan is correct that both the 400 and 420 have the front pto rated at 2000 rpm, so gearbox speed should not be an issue. The interchange issue comes with the front mounting tabs and the rear mounting arms would need to be swapped around.

Gaylord,

If you start a thread in the Attachments section we can keep all the discussion of your project in one place. I ma going out on a limb here and presume that teh missing verb between "could" and "me" in the first sentence is HELP or something similar. Also the landscape rake you are trying to simulate was made by YORK and some product information is on this site under related vendor attachments at:
http://www.wfmachines.com/info/index.php

I made a very simple landscape rake using the tines from ASC, their item number 10454, which have an outside length of 27 inches each. There is a thread at http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/17/102901.html
which shows my build and has pictures of other rakes as well...

Kevin, the gear box on a 400 60 inch deck is set to work in the opposite direction than the deck off a 420. I think this is because the Kohler engines run opposite to the engines in the 420. I am in the precess now in finding the proper gear box for my 60 inch 400 deck.
