Burl,
I just went through this last week. My hydro had a couple leaks which I had to remove the hydro to fix. The reverse check valve was leaking. The forward and reverse valves are just a check valve not a pressure relief valve. The only time the valve can operate is when the lever on the side of the tractor is moved to the freewheeling position to move a tractor manually.(Push it)
There are two o rings on the outside of the valve cartridge which can be replaced. They prevent any internal leakage from the high pressure side to the bypass side. JD parts shows item # 12 CH11559 packing at the top of the valve stem. This is what usually leaks. The problem is there is no way that I can see to disassemble it.
The forward check valve has a part# AM882548 and the reverse is AM882549?? They are different!! I removed both check valves and then discovered this difference. I called JD parts and they did not have a clue which was which. After looking closely at them I noticed that one of them had a small orifice on the side and notches in the hex head on the top. Finally, I looked at TM1517 which stated that the reverse valve was the one with the orifice and MUST be used for the left side of the hydro. Jd parts refers to the valves as front and rear. The TM refers to them as forward and reverse.
The two check valves would cost over $600!! Since I have NEVER used the freewheeling option, I decided to fix the problem for $2. I throughly cleaned the ball valve and the entire assembly. I cleaned the top of the valves and put JB Weld around the stem. First I pulled the stem as far out as it would go and put an o ring on the stem just to hold it up for the glue to dry. After I installed the modified valves, I ran the tractor for 15 minutes and no leakage.
Works for me and my wallet,
