I got my early 316 kohler up and running.
The used transmission out of my 317 parts tractor worked perfect.
I took it out and used it a little today, and after running a few minutes to purge the air out of the hydro unit, I took a break and checked the fluid in the sight tube. It was a little low, so I removed the fill plug, and it burped a bunch of fluid out all over the place. There was significant pressure built up in the differential. I topped off the fluid, but was wondering how these are supposed to vent. I know the 110/112 tractors have a vent on the top of the transmission case, but I saw no such vent anywhere on this one.

There is supposed to be a vent device, looks like a small fuel filter but has no filter element ant it has a small hole in the side of it, mounted in the high spot of the clear plastic fluid level line. Shows up in the owner's manual pictures or JD Parts diagrams.

You are exactly right Vinnie!
I replaced the sight tube and "filter"!
I used a standard small engine fuel filter that looked just like the old one that was on it.
I pulled the old one out of the trash and wiped all the dirt off it, sure enough, had a small hole drilled in it.
Just drilled a tiny hole in the new filter, all vented!
Thanks so much for your Help Vinnie!
