I am working on a John Deere 300 and I have found it has a bad hydrostatic unit.
I’m wondering with models had the same transmission so I could get it going again.
I’m thinking that the 300,312,314, and 316k would all be the same. But I’m not sure about the 317

The AM39998 transmission for the 300 closed frame tractor series you listed is also the correct number for the 317...

Thank you Chuck, I do have a 317 parts tractor but I know nothing about it. Guess I’ll see if I can get it running and try the transmission.

Well… I took a gamble. Rather then buy a new coil for the 317,I bought new oil and filter for the transmission. We removed the rear axle from the tractor and bench tested it. At first we capped the ends of the lines that run to the control valve, but then I decided maybe it would be better to just connect them together. To keep them from making any unnecessary pressure. Dad took a 1/4 inch bolt and sharpened the ends a little, put it through the hole in the shaft and we ran it with a big socket on the drill. Transmission Seems to work. 👍
Was easy enough to try before moving forward.
