Although they never came factory with side panels since they were the "economy" hydrostat drive model and that was one of the price saving cuts, I would guess that 300, 314 or 316 Kohler side panels would be the best try since I know that 317 panels are longer front to rear and those tractors are all single cylinder models unlike the twin cylinder 317, although I'm not sure how well the muffler outlet would match up with any of them.

Rich, if they had them, they must have been added later.
As Kent said, they did not come with them from Deere.
My grandfather bought one new, and had it until 87 when he traded it in on the 318. No side covers. Even headlights were an option on that one.

I looked on JDParts, and they dont list anything for the 312, just the 314.

My bro has a 312 and a 317. I believe he said the side covers from a 317 would work and actually mounted them on the tractor to see if they would fit. That is the reason I said to look at the 317 side panels. A lot of those panels come up on e##y
for sale. About all that would have to be changed is the hood mounting hardware if anything to mount the sidepanels properly. The early 300/316's side panels undoubtedly will fit too but seem to be a bit harder to find.
Jim is correct, the 312 was an economy model, no side panels, no headlights or tail lights, single pedal brakes etc. All can be added as its the same tractor as the 300,314,316 and 317 (w/exceptions)

Rich,

I would look for a set of 314 side panels. The bottom has a clip to hold it to the frame and 2 1/4 x 20 bolts to hold it at the top plus 2 locating pins. Also if the 312's muffler routes out the right side upright and side panel then they should fit. The 300 and 316's have 4 bolts holding them on, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. Also, the exhaust is routed through the front of the side panel and not through the side. I'm not sure about the 317 panels.

I would agree that the 300/316 panels would not work.

The 312 and 317 had a green hood support up front like the 200 series and 318 style tractors. the 300 and 316k didnt have those.

The 300 and 316 sidepanels appear the same but in a sense are different. My 316 is like the 314's. Spring clip on the bottom holding it to the frame
and two 1/4-20 bolts, one to the hinge on the hood and the other to the dash pedestal. Both have alignment pins too. The 300's have four bolts other than that they are the same. And both Mike and Bob are correct they will not work on a 312. The 314 has to be the best fit/match for a 312.

Rich,

I have both a 317 and a 300 so I can get you dimensions or pictures for you to compare to the holes in your tractor if it has them. I was the one with the 317 panels. Let me know if want me to measure them.

Thanks---Jim

I am going to email you pics of my 316. It will give you a better idea of what a 314 looks like under the side covers. The 317 side covers should be a simple put it on and use it. There is an aluminum air box mounted on the motor and a heat shield the mounts to the front of the frame that hinges for the hood mount too. The side covers bolt to the hinges and to the dash pedestal. It reality you could use the 317's pretty much as your tractor sits. The 314 most likely to. The heat shield acts as a directional box to force heat away from the motor. the 312 does not have this hardware because it has no side panels and its not really needed. Its all open air

Rich,
The 317 side panels WILL fit, no problem. The 317's muffler outlet is on the left side so you'll have to braze up the hole for it (yes I went so far to do that to a set). I decided not to use those and decided to use the 300/316k style. It's just my personal taste and partially that I do not have the stock muffler.
I will take issue with what's been written in the threads above on headlights. My 312 came with them, except it didn't have rear lamps, just reflectors.
I have pics stuck someowhere, but won't bother with posting. It essentially makes it look like a 317.
If you find a 314 you'll need the front hood support it's different. Why JD did so many different things with side covers on the older 300's is beyond me.
