Ok guys, here's the scenario. My buddy has a 210 that had a burnt coil and couldn't afford a new one so I pulled the one off my spare, perfectly running 314 and put it in his 210.

I went to Napa and picked up a new one and put it in my 314. Now I can't get this thing to run to save my life. Just so you know this is an internal resistor coil. It will start but just spit and sputter and finally die.

Any ideas?

Ok, so I didn't want two non-running tractors on my hands so I did not repossess my old coil but I did throw in the points and condenser that I thought were bad from his tractor.

Hit the key and she fired right up and ran great so I shut her down because I had other work to do figuring the problem was solved. Came back later to move her and no go, wouldn't even fire. Pulled the plug to check for spark and no spark. So I ran the points file between the contacts and she started but ran rough again.

Should I throw in a new set of points and condenser?

Paul if you have an automotive coil instead of an internal resistor Kohler type of coil it is very easy to quickly burn up a set of points. Just because a coil is the right shape and black doesn't mean it is the correct one. Tell NAPA you need a coil for a K series small engine. Me I would ask for my Kohler coil back and let your buddy deal with getting the right coil. Roger

Thanks for the reply Roger. It says "No external resistor required" on the outside of the coil. I will throw a new set of points and a condenser in and see what happens.

By the way, what is the easiest way to tighten/loosen the gap adjustment screw on these things? I'm about ready to drill a hole in the frame.

Paul,
long screwdriver works sometimes or, you can loosen the front motor mounts and raise it a 1/2 inch to get a screwdriver/extension bit in there to loosen the cap and set the points.
Sometimes it helps to remove air filter/air box from carb to give you more light and room in there.
I've had to do all of them at one time or another.

Ok, I've made some progress. Put in new points and condenser and set points. She starts and runs pretty smooth at half throttle but when i take her up to wide open throttle she spits and sputters and misses. Should I be looking at the carb settings?

Another update. I set the carb to the settings in the service manual and no difference. Pulled the plug and it was black and kind of sooty. Cleaned it up and gapped it to .010 instead of, the .035 that it should be, and she runs a better especially at wide open throttle. Still not right but better.

What would make it run better with a smaller plug gap?

Paul,

Did you figure out anything? I have a recently acquired 314 doing the same thing. I've rebuilt the carb and set it, also cleaned and set the points. A friend suggested checking valve clearance, which I will check tonight.
