I chewed the original flywheel on my '92 316 this Winter when temps were long below zero.

I finally replaced with a new one, put it back together and it starts perfectly.

But I have a stuck battery light and no electrical coming to the voltage regulator. I have carefully metered this so as not to short anything.

The PTO engages. I have charged the battery. I have triple checked to hook up all the wires as before.

What do I do next?

Thanks.

David,

Welcome to the WFM forums! Your Onan powered 316 is covered in the TM1590 technical manual where you will find wiring diagrams and test procedures/trouble shooting lists.

First thing to check is the AC voltage coming from the stator under the flywheel. Here is the wiring excerpt:

...and how to test the AC voltage output of the stator itself:

Since you had the engine out to replace the flywheel, your issue may be as simple as a loose connector or a bad ground connection.

I will send you some more diagrams that are too large to post here... Let us know what you find and we can continue trouble shooting as needed.

Hello Chuck,

Thank you kindly for this. It is helpful.

I ran the AC test with my meter and there is nothing coming from the stator. I am fearing it was somehow damaged, but I can figure out how this would have happened.

Looks like I will need to tear out the engine and flywheel, again.

David,

Sorry to hear that your stator is not putting out any voltage. When you get back in there, look for a break in the wiring where the pigtail connects to the solid wire from the winding itself, as that can be a pretty fragile mechanical connection after being exposed to the heat of the engine for decades.

Something to check before you pull the engine -- carefully inspect the connections on the regulator end of the pigtail -- might be a break there as well.

The part number for the stator from Cummins/Onan is 191-1456 and from Deere it is HE191-1456. Deere of course marks these parts up, so going to Cummins is going to be less expensive. Onanparts.com also has it for about $45...while the Deere dealer might run twice that. Even the on-line Deere parts houses like GreenFarmParts.com show the stator at about $80 each.
