Want to have H2 hydraulics on this 316 onan I'm about to get. Would getting parts from a 318 be the best way to go. Would that be a direct swap. I do have access to 317 hydraulics ? Looked like someone on this site has done this before but I cant find it. Any suggestions ?

I am about to do this same swap, the parts i got are from a 317 tho. Ive been told (and it looks like) mounting the larger valve body and connecting the new linkage to the second spool are the hardest parts. The steering box/shaft is tucked right up to the valve like white on rice, and it may be nessecary to either drill two new holes to mount the valve, or fabricate a bracket for the same result. Of course then both linkages would need to be customized or fabricated too. I dont think it matters what valve you use, the problems remain the same. Running soft lines to the front also seems like the easiest way to get the fluid to where you can use it.
Aux-Hydraulics makes a kit i do believe....runs like 275$ i think....

I did this to my sons 316 a couple years ago. I bought a used 318 valve, levers and two front steel lines for the left side on ebay. The valve has to be mounted at a different angle than on a 318,because of the steering box on the 316. I just drilled new holes,so the valve would clear the steering box. You'll have to fabricate two new linkages to hook up the control levers. The steel lines from a 318 can be bent to work on a 316,not to hard to do with the correct size tubing bender. The levers are a bolt on replacement. Very nice upgrade to be able to use a power angle blade.

Hello Scott
I just finished Building a 1991 John Deere 316 for my Son in law that had the Onan P-218 in it. We had Bought a Part's Tractor being a 1982 John Deere 317 that was an H-2 Tractor that had the factory divertor valve mounted on it. I was going to make his H-1 Tractor and H-2 Machine but when I saw how large the H-2 Valve was in the 317 and Measured where his Valve was I felt it would not work easily so I passed on that project there is not much room in there to work with and the 317 had all steel lines on it's Valve that were heavily rusted so I figured if I tried to take them off they would surely Break or have leak's after I reinstalled them on the 316. Regards, Kurt

Thanks everybody. Not sure exactly what to do with the linkage from the levers to the control unit for this modification. Downloaded pictures of a 318 and 317 control valve and they look very similar, the levers look exactly the same. What to use my plow in a bad way.
Question: does the stock 316 h1 hydraulic lever have a float position ?
