I have an 87 316 p218g. I had to jump it with a jumper box but it wont stay running unless I leave the box on it. It shuts off as soon as I take the cable off the battery. Would this be a voltage regulator or a battery?

Battery because you have to have a good battery in most JDs for them to continue to run. Roger
