Would it be realistic to assume my 316 onan could pull a 750lb lawn roller? I got a concrete filled drum and am hesitant to hitch it up and go....obviously this would be on level ground, but i dont want to kill the tractor. I have no owners manual or anything to look this info up.

Thats the confirmation i was looking for!
Yes it is in as good a condition that i cant get it in, spent most of the winter tearing it down to the frame and re sealing/ fixing/addressing all the issues. Needless to say i didnt want to kill it 100yds out of the garage on its "new" maiden voyage!

Lol, momma has put up with our young kids all by herself for countless evenings while i was happily wrenching on the tractor, i think she would enjoy that very much. Does anyone happen to know the capacity numbers for the 316/318? Like towing/three point hitch lift limits etc...?

Hello Sam
I let the wife ride on my freshly restored 1983 John Deere 318 right after I had back surgery she kept up the four lawn's that we mow, when I couldn't do them & now it is hard for me to get any seat time in L.O.L. I think you will be fine pulling that roller around with it these John Deere hydro's are tough to hurt as well as a good running Onan. Good luck, Kurt

Should have no problem moving it but if you have hills keep in mind you need to be able to STOP too.

The stopping issue worried me as well, i can avoid most of the hills, but there are some slight slopes in my lawn. If it gets away from me there will be no stopping it, its a real beast. I think i have killed off the mole or moles that destroyed my lawn, so hopefully pulling the roller isnt a regular occurence

Moles are very territorial - One mole is all you have , unless you have multiple acreage . They don't allow intermingling in burrowed paths ; although it looks like there would have to be more than one , there isn't .

Been there ;... still am .

I pull my 3500 lb trailer around the yard. The hydro can stop it but you should make sure your brakes are working regardless on hilly areas.

I did not know that about moles....ive put so much poison in the burrows i cant imagine he s still alive down there. Havent noticed any new burrows either....
I have read that today, to buy a tractor with the same "heavy dutyness" of a 300/400 series, that you would most likely be looking at a sub compact. Is this true? Obviously the frames and other chassis components are well built, but what about the hydrostats in the older tractors is so much better than the ones made today.....I like to use, but not abuse, my stuff, can i expect performance from my 316 like that of a newer X series, or better?

I agree Gary. I have trapped 3 over a four day period, all 3 in the same main run. However, it is true that one can do so much damage you may think you have more. I have read that one can tunnel 160' in one day.

I also pull a 650 lb. roller with my 316 on hilly acreage without any problems.
