Has anyone ever had the u-joint collar strip out and not mate to the splined shaft on the steering box? If so, what is the best repair- it seems that the steering shaft is no longer available at the dealer.
Dan ... not sure exactly where you're referring to ... Kohler or Onan? I've got a damaged steering gear housing from an onan tractor I parted out ... Bryan
Thanks guys, the shaft on the steering box looks okay, but the collar on the bottom of the shaft is stripped out. I may have to replace the entire steering shaft. Any other suggestions?
Dan ... I see what you're referring to ... bottom collar of the driveshaft. I've never repaired one ... surprised that no one else here has responded yet. I've got parts from a couple 316's, but don't think I have one available at the moment. If I find one, I'll let you know ...
I would just replace the entire assembly, I had the same problem on a 316 I had and bought a used one. Not sure how it happens unless the bolt gets loose because the steering box shaft has a half moon machined out of it that the bolt on the collar goes into.
After taking much of the tractor apart to remove the steering shaft and steering box, I see that the steering box shaft now has a slight groove all of the way around the shaft and the collar is worn pretty bad. I might have to replace both.
Some of the splines were deformed; I was able to straighten them and put everything back together. I added a set screw to help hold it from coming loose. The tractor seems okay for now. Thanks for all of your input.
Hello Dan
It's good that you were able to repair your steering spline shaft. if you don't mind me asking how many Hour's are on your Tractor ? Is this a common problem for the 316 steering shafts to mess up from getting Loose ? Thanks, Kurt
Kurt, when i got my 88 316 with 650 hrs, the entire steering assembly was loose, i tightened up the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame, and so far so good. It does seem like this is a common issue. I would look over the whole system....
Kurt, the 316 is a 1984 and had just over 1000 hours on it when I got it. I spent two years on a total rebuild (including the Onan B43) and I had rebuilt the steering box along with everything else. When I reassembled it I followed specs and procedures carefully. The splines must have been worn enough to cause the problem. Steering is okay now and I'm keeping a close eye on it.
