I have a chance to purchase a 317 but there is a lot of vibration to the tractor. The machine runs well and the mower runs well when engaged. The current owner said that he was cutting grass and heard a loud bang and that is when the vibrating started. Also he states that it will make a banging noise every so often. Can anyone give me some advice to what is wrong? I think it might be the drive shaft. I have been on this site reading for a year and this is my first post.

Thanks Guys for your time.

I agree with Randy, do a compression test before you buy it. My dad had a 317 and we both thought the vibration from it was caused by it having a bad driveshaft, after looking into it the driveshaft was fine, but it had a broken rod.

Engine #2 let go when my brother owned the 317 I have now, rod went with a loud bang. Engine still ran on one cylinder. Pulled it apart and found that one side of the crankcase was cracked by the flying rod. I put a used Series 1 in it.
