I think the 120, late 140, and 300-317 use the same Dana 20 differential. I've heard the Dana 20 was also used in some Jeeps of the same era. Not sure if it was used in the front or rear diff but maybe something like a Detroit Locker or a limited slip would be available for the Jeep application and still work in a JD?
Perhaps the ring and pinion gears could also be interchangable? I haven't blown up any of my tractors rear ends yet to find out myself!

how much weight do you have?
What implement are you using to remove snow?
Do you use tire chains?
were you trying to back up a hill?

I have fluid filled tires with chains, and an Al Z rear weight bracket with two suitcase weights. I'm using a 54 blade. I was pushing snow at the end of my drive away from the mail box. There is a slight angle but somehow it got caught by the snow. My wife pulled me out with an E350 loaded with tools. The van had a hard time pulling the tractor out.

I don't think you have enough weight and you can never have too much with snow.

I have 200 in wheel weights, my 230 lbs and 4 suitcase weights with a weight bracket. I dont get stuck any more going backwards.

Did you have only one wheel spin? did you try to apply the brake to the one spinning to get traction on the other one?

He is using chains. If you never get stuck then you won't know what to do when you do ;-) Remember the no push or pull rule on the 317. A small ATV winch mounted to the rear might be convenient enough to use before getting seriously stuck.

bar tires don't work well on ice, only chains will help.

I have been stuck plenty of times with my 420 and due to not having enough weight most of the time or doing something I was not paying attention to like removing snow going down hill and forgetting to float the thrower. once the front wheels fall into snow its hard to get out even with tons of weight on.

a winch, chain fall, come along is nice but most don't have access to them when these things happen or forget they own them

got my 430 stuck in mud with turfs years ago and used my chain fall and a 1 inch rope to a tree while tractor slowly churned the wheels in reverse at idle. it now has bar tires and almost got stuck this fall doing leaves from a big branch that had the y part around my front tire. once branch was removed it was easy to get out of the hole the firestones made.

Knotty is dead on. Chains are the only thing that helps on ice or hard packed snow, and it gets hard packed when the wheels spin because of the weight in front of it.

On my 420 with the 47 snowblower, I have two 52 pound wheel weights per wheel, and either 6 suitcase weights or a heavy scraper blade with 4 suitcase weights in addition to the chains. I am seldom stuck.

I admit to using the differential lock from time to time, and it would be a fine addition to any snow handling tractor. There are 420-430 rear ends with the differential lock for sale from time-to-time on the usual sites including WFM. I don't know if you can swap them to a 317 easily. I am sure it can be done with the right amount of engineering. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can speak up.

As a previous owner of a 317 (no diff lock) and current owner of a 455 (with diff lock), I can tell you that the individual rear brakes are better than nothing, but nowhere near as good as a real differential lock. I had a number of situations on the 317 where each wheel could be made to spin independently, depending which brake was applied, but no forward motion resulted.

Bar tires suck on ice and packed snow. Need a ton of weight.

I dont run chains because of the rough ride and tearing up the driveway. So I just stack on the cast iron.
