I ran my 317 w/ Onan out of fuel by mistake and now it won't run. I replaced the fuel pump with a used one a few months ago. After it ran out of gas I primed the fuel pump and fuel filter and line to the carb but tractor will not run.

My question is in regards to the other line that I guess you would call the pulse line that goes from the side of the fuel pump to behind the engine shroud cover. Should I pour/prime fuel into that line also?

Any other tips/ tricks would be appreciated . Thanks

JD,

DO NOT ADD GAS TO THE PULSE LINE!! The pulse line is not for carrying any liquid -- it is a direct connection to the crankcase and use the variations in crankcase pressure with each revolution of the crank/piston to provide the needed vacuum/pressure pulses to the fuel pump diaphragm to make it pump.

Since you ran the tank completely dry of gas, the most likely cause of your present symptoms is crud in the jets of the carburetor. You will have to disassemble it and clean it. You might verify that the carburetor is plugged by pouring a SMALL amount of fuel directly into the carburetor throat and starting it -- it should run for a brief time.

Thanks Chuck! Glad I asked! That would have sucked!

I did pour gas directly down the carb and it ran for a bit the stalked out. Then hooked up another fuel line directly to the carb and with the help of a funnel and poring fuel that way tried to get it running but it would not.

So it appears the carb needs to be cleaned as you suggested.

Thanks!

The fuel pump on the k17 is mechanical and operated off a lobe on the camshaft. Here is a drawing of it from the PC1698 for the 317 tractor -- the fuel line should NOT run directly from the tank to the carburetor...

The fuel pump on the Kohler KT17 should be just to the left of the carburetor. And yes, the line should go from the tank to the fuel pump, and then another short one to the carb.
It's possible that someone in the last 40 years has added an electric pump somewhere and then bypassed the mechanical fuel pump on the engine.
