I am new to the forum, I have a 1981 Model 317. I have a 140 H3 valve with linkage and a 420 set of levers (the mounting block matches the 317 block). My question is will these item "bolt in" or am I in for a big conversion project?

Thanks to All

Sounds like you've got the right parts for the conversion. I just finished a conversion on my 314 using the 140 H3 valve and a set of 140 levers. I got some wrong info on the 140 levers; these don't just bolt in like the 420 levers. I fabricated new parts to make this work. Not the easy way to go!

In looking at the Linkage arm on the Hyd levers, the 317 H2 handles the linkage arm pretty much lines up with the lever, on the 420 handles the linkage arm is at approximately 90 degrees to the levers. Due to three keyways in the 420 handles I can get them pretty much lined up, but then the set screw no longer is on the keyway in use.

Has anyone else used these parts to make the conversion, if so any advice on what I need to do or any other problems I may run into??

Thanks in advance PP

Well I now have the 140 H3 valve installed (bolted right in) a little tweeking and all the lines are hooked up. The 420 levers installed. Now I am trying to figure out the linkages, the 140 links nor the 317 links seem to work. Has anyone else made the upgrade, and will a set of 420 linkages work??

And of course while trying to figure out the linkages I look over at the Drive shaft and OMG, one of sides of the u-joint is all eat up, so now I have to replace the drive shaft. So second question, is there any difference between a series I and a series II drive shaft? Also best place to get one.

Thanks for any info.

Paul,

As I recall the 420 links are longer than the ones you need. You may have to make them. I bought several different types of links from E*** and I think got 2 of them to work and ended up having to make 1. Ended up having to grind some of the frame for clearance. Might want to look at the 400 links. Hopefully someone else can give you more concrete info as I did this 2 years ago and didn't take any notes.

Paul,

I did this on my 317 and used the two levers from the 317 and the 3rd one from the 420. I had to make the 3rd lever links from scratch out of flat stock. Not a big deal just takes a little measuring and thinking. The drive shaft is a Deere item. The new ones are greaseable and last better. They are also expensive so hang on to our wallet.

Iam so glad I decided to make the Hyd conversion!! I now have the engine and driveshaft out. The front u-joint one of the ends of the cross pieces in it was totally broken and the other was about to fail also. Im not sure how much damage that would have caused. But now it is easier to finish the Hyd conversion and I'm sure with a new drive shaft it will be like a new tractor.
