Hi I have a 317 JD garden tractor with a 18 HP Onan engine and it seems to quit running randomly, then start right back up after it's been running a while. Any information on what could be the cause of this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The P-series Onan engines have the electronic ignition module that sometimes exhibits a temperature sensitive tendency to stop at higher operating temperatures, then works again after it cools down. If restart is immediate, then its not that module -- maybe a circuit breaker tripping. Aged/stressed/corroded circuit breakers tend to trip at lower than rated currents...but are self resetting. Does this cut-out symptom only occur when using the PTO?

This sounds like the circuit breaker tripping and resetting like Chuck mentioned above. And its not that expensive to replace. However I would check it first for corrosion.

I believe all the 317's that were retrofitted with Onans were the P218. They had a condenser attached to positive side of coil.
