My 317 with KT17II is no longer governing as it will just run away high speed if the throttle is taken off idle. The engine starts just fine and runs good when throttle is closed at idle. I put this engine in several years ago and it only has about 327 hours on it since new. Anybody know what may have come loose or broken in governor? The only technical data I have on the engine is the service manual that came with it. The service manual just has one picture of the governor in the assembly section so I can't get an idea of what may be loose or fell off inside. It's a big deal to take this engine apart from what I read on it. The case would need to be split to get to the governor. Thanks for any ideas on it.

Greg,

Sorry, I do not have any direct experience with the internals of the governor on that model engine. Maybe another member here will chime in that does know...

Read through the description on page 22 as to how the governor is supposed to work and how to adjust it.

Greg,
Here are some things to look for before you consider tearing into the engine. Check the throttle and governor linkages for binding or debris (mouse nest?). In particular, be sure the air filter housing rubber dump valve is not binding on the throttle linkage. It is possible the throttle shaft has come loose from the throttle arm. Loosen the clamping bolt and re-tighten the arm on the throttle shaft per the Kohler manual. Behind the top of the oil dipstick there should be a Phillips head screw going into the block. This is a governor stop pin--be sure the screw is there and is tight. Hope there is a simple answer.

Thanks Paul. Actually, I wrote "throttle shaft" and "throttle arm" when it should be "governor shaft" and "governor arm". The 4th and 5th sentences should read:

It is possible the governor shaft has come loose from the governor arm. Loosen the clamping bolt and re-tighten the arm on the governor shaft per the Kohler manual.

You were right Harold! After I readjusted the governor arm on the shaft the engine runs great. I really appreciate the advice and help on this.

BTW, while I was troubleshooting the engine I found out that I could get a view of the governor gear through the oil filler opening after removing the tube. If a guy had a borescope it would be real easy to check the internals for damage. Here's a picture I took looking into the oil filler opening.

Greg,
It's great that your 317 is back in good running order. Simple and no-cost fixes are the best kind to have! That is a nice picture down the filler tube. Your thoughts on using a scope (or even a dental mirror) have been added to the list of handy tips.
Regards,
Harold
