This may sound dumb but where is the solenoid on the John Deere 317? Mine never came with one so I am having trouble finding where it goes, can someone please help me out? Thank you!!!

Depends on what type of starter you have. Later models have the solenoid on the starter, early models have on the side of the hour meter a little bit more forward and down.

Mine is a 1981 model... and it doesn't have a hour meter so I take it that it is on the starter?

It should be somewhere under the battery box. It doesn't really matter where it is mounted as long as it is out of the way, and well grounded.
