I have an 1987 318, The engine periodically quits while running at full throttle. If I let it sit for a while it will start right up and run for a while and quite again. No specific trend as to running time sometimes it will run for hours before stopping, other times not. I replaced the ignition coil. Didn't help. Any ideas?

Hi Jeff - Next time it occurs, loosen the fuel cap and see if it will start. Possibly the fuel cap vent is clogged. If air can't enter the fuel tank as gas is drawn from it, a vacuum is created in the tank. Give that a try and see if that is your problem. - Dave

Jeff,

I had the same problem. Found a bad wire going to the coil. The manual gave me quite a few good ideas as to what to look at. I'll look it over and test the TDM before I bought a new one.
