I picked up a very nice 1984 318 today that does not run. When cranking, the points push rod does not move and the engine sounds as if it has very little compression. The previous owner said it ran good before quitting. It has a 48" 3 point tiller mounted so I imagine it was working hard. I am going to remove and dismantle the engine when I get time but was wondering if others had seen the same problem.

Well Rob I can't think thats a good sign since that rod is driven off the camshaft. I would guess you have a broken camshaft. If thats the case and you wanna tear it down I have a camshaft that will work for you.

FIRST, remove the point box assy.
sometimes the pin will STICK with the points
in the OPEN position.
with the point box removed, turn the engine
over to see if the camshaft is moving.
