I picked up a very nice 1984 318 today that does not run. When cranking, the points push rod does not move and the engine sounds as if it has very little compression. The previous owner said it ran good before quitting. It has a 48" 3 point tiller mounted so I imagine it was working hard. I am going to remove and dismantle the engine when I get time but was wondering if others had seen the same problem.

broken rod or broken cam gear would be my guess, wont know more till you tear it apart

I got the B43G engine apart to find the cam gear and the crank gear are damaged. I removed the timing cover from a P218 parts engine and both gears look good. Are the cams interchangeable and what is the best way to pull the cam drive gear off the crank?

Cams are the same. Even though the P218 has electronic ignition the cams were still made with the lobes at the end to drive the points plunger.

You should compare the old cam to the later one to be 100% certain though.

For several years the blocks were still machined to accept the points box and will have a "plate" covering the plunger hole.

To remove the gear you need something like this:
