Well last winter was brutal and took it's toll on the 318. It has developed several oil leaks: oil drain valve, oil fill tube, and a leak near the oil filter. The oil drain valve does not seem to be closing completely and I am guessing their are O-rings inside. Is their a way to remove this without pulling the engine? Oil fill tube would also be an o-ring? I don't know what going on with the oil filter area, tomorrow I plan on washing the tractor and removing the engine tins for further inspection. What should I be looking for? This tractor plows an 1/8 long paved road and for a two wheel drive tractor it does very well.

The leak around the oil filter is likely the gasket behind the oil filter adapter that the filter screw onto. The two bolts that hold this thing on have tendency to back of with time on the machine. You can change this without removing the engine but it is not easy. I have done it. The new gaskets offered these days have been improved with what looks like a small bead of silicone around the perimeter and around the holes in the gasket. They are available from Deere or places like Robert Kummer who often posts on this sight. Depending on the age of your tractor/engine the oil fill tube is pressed in on the later model Onans. If that is the case remove it, clean all surfaces thoroughly, and re-install it using a good grade of Locktite on the end that is inserted into the block..............Hope this helps.........Gary

Boomer,

I have a P218, but after taking the tractor outside today and blowing off with compressed air it looks like their is a leak at the PTO shaft and not the oil fill tube. I am considering pulling the engine to clean and reseal. This is the only way I can see to remove the oil drain valve and completely clean the engine. I will then use one of John Lang's firewall insulation kits, I had some real overheating problems this summer. I will do more investigation tomorrow and hopefully find my compression tester.

I also wrenched on an Onan a while back that appeared to have a leaking front oil seal only to find after removing the clutch, clutch mounting bracket, and the muffler that the leak was not coming from the front seal at all, rather from the plug that covers the blind end of the camshaft and running down the front of the engine to the point of saturating the clutch. This plug had actually come loose and I have no idea how. I removed the plug (like a freeze plug), cleaned all surfaces of everything to get rid of all traces of oil, sparingly applied some sealer, repositioned the same plug and set it. That took care of the leak entirely. Maybe you can be so lucky................Gary

Earlier this year I worked on a Onan where the bearing plate bolts had loosened up and started leaking badly. A couple bolts were most of a turn loose. That was only clear after removing the clutch.

In reading Cliff's post I was reminded of another experience of stopping oil leaks on an Onan. The clutch adapter mounting plate used on Deere applications has (4) bolts holding it to the block. One leaking engine i worked on had oil seeping from around both of the lower (2) of these mounting bolts. These (2) bolt holes are tapped through to the oil cavity of the engine and require an oil resistant thread sealer if removed. Locktite makes such a product and that is what I successfully used to stopped that leak..................Gary
