Well, I pulled the tractor back into the shop this morning. Pulled the fender pan and pulled the check valves as well as the charge relief valve. All were VERY clean; check balls working properly. Cleaned them anyway, as well as the charge relief valve. Roll pin on linkage appears fine with no wear, overall linkage is tight. Put it all back together and tested it. Forward on flat ground as well as inclines is GREAT. Backing up on a slight incline I still notice it slows down.
Any other thoughts, guys? Thinking I'll just live with it. Small issue, really. I just LOVE this tractor and all the toys I have to go with it!!!

(#260 3-point mower, 54" 4-way blade, 1-bottom plow, disc harrow). As far as I'm concerned, Christmas is every day I get to use it!!

Tom, if forward is working good with no problems, and you did all the other checks. I still suspect a problem with the reverse check valve not seating or leaking. Another thing to check, are the brakes possibly dragging in reverse?

Tim:

Dont' believe the brakes are dragging; I'll have to wait for the weekend to pull the rear wheels and check. I'm not sure how to check the reverse valve; I don't remember if the TM describes it. If it were the brakes, wouldn't it do so all the time?

Yes, one would think if they are dragging in reverse, they would also drag in forward. I have seen stranger things happen though.

You are also correct there is limited info in the manual on the check valves. This is all I found. I will continue to look to see if I can find any additional info.

Hi Stan:

You're right. I followed the TM for the procedure; still no better. It just slows down when backing up a hill, which would lead one to think of the reverse check valve, but on level ground it's fine.
Really got me puzzled...

Guys:

Thanks SO much for the information. I may pop those valves out again next week when I get time. I will say that when I did pull them today they were spotless, did not show a leak at the top, and the check balls moved freely when the tops were depressed. Cleaned them thoroughly however, and re-inserted. I'm just not sure that's the problem. Save for pulling the hydro out and apart, I can't think of anything else. I may have to live with it.

To all who have provided the great advice to this point...

I ordered all the "wear" parts for the linkage from JD this morning. hopefully they will be in by the weekend when I get back to the shop from work (what a bummer, I have to leave for four days at a time due to living in north central PA and working in Baltimore---Fire Captain). I spend a lot of time reading this site as well as poring over the JD parts catalogue.

Another two projects await my attention--completing the rebuilding of the engine in my 1953 Model 60 NFE JD, and work on the mag of my JD Model "E" 1 1/2 HP hit and miss engine...

I'll keep you all posted on the success of replacing the parts in the linkage. Also ordered a spring gauge today to measure friction on the hydro lever...pretty cheap at $20!!!

Just a thought, if the valves are the same, swap them and see if the problem stays with reverse, or if it now has a problem in forward. If the problem changed to forward function, you have a bad valve. If the problem stays with reverse, the valves are most likely good, and something else is causing the problem. We use this procedure to check multifunction valves in large hydrostat systems.

Thanks ,Chris!! I'll give that a whirl over the weekend and post the results. Again, is this site awesome or not???

If the entire country got together on issues as we all seem to do, helping each other out, wouldn't it be great?

there are a few pivot points on the hydro linkage and I have had the same problem with my 318 and it was a worn linkage problem not only at the hydro but also up at the bottom of the control handle.I tried to adjust my linkage and found that if I increased my reverse speed the problem went away but then slowed down my forward speed.no happy fix other than to replace the worn parts.
Good luck, Joe

Kinda what I figured. We'll see what happens when I install the parts. Hopefully they'll be in by Saturday AM. I'll most likely take pics before and after and post them. Hopefully from all this we can help another member with the same problem. Really want to get this fixed before I head to Portland IN for the Tri State show next Tuesday.

Regards,

Tom
