JD318 with Onan B43G

The starter was replaced a few years ago in addition to supplementing with the starter improvement relay that is oft recommended by the 318 enthusiast community.

Everything was fine, but since the cold Fall weather hit (in Michigan) the starter will continue to run for 5 - 10 seconds even if the key is turned counterclockwise to the off position and pulled out. I am worried that if this worsens my starter is going to burn out, and possibly chip teeth on the flex plate when the engine fires up and it is still engaged.

I am thinking a solenoid or brain box issue. What do you think?

abcd, I'm thinking the solenoid or ignition switch. It should be easy to test with a 12 volt test light. Put it on the switch start terminal and see if it stays on when you turn the key off. Do the same with the solenoid. The contacts could be sticking internally.

Could be:

Keyswitch
Starter solenoid
The relay in the improvement kit.

I was thinking that too but it sounds like its spinning even if the engine is not running.
