Just put the sweepster to do my lawn. I started the front pto and the brush started then stopped, restarted and now kills tractor, been through grounds and wiring and cleaned battery, check Ignition switch. Bad coil field? next to check.
Hello John
Does this Issue happen when the tractor is cold just after starting it or after it has warmed up ? It may be a Bad field coil on the PTO clutch but I would say that it may also be that your air Gap is too excessive on the electric PTO clutch. As these electric clutch's get some time on them they get weaker and it Takes less air gap for them to keep working correctly. I have my 1983 John Deere 318 electric coil gap set at a Tight 0.10" and it work's fine. if I set to factory specification it work's Intermittently shutting down the mowing deck when using it. I hope this help's, Kurt
Hello Kurt
I would say the tractor was running for 15 mins. I was brushing my lawn and was 50ft when the brush just stopped. I backed up to start again got 10 feet killed the tractor. Then every time I start the tractor up and flip on the the front pto, it just kills it. That was my next move, to check the air gap. I also checked the wire running down to the coil to make sure it wasn't rubbing or grounded to medal. thank John
Thankyou all for helping, I took the brush off and found out it was the Coil,
thanks to a friend was back up and run in a hour on saturday.
Swept my lawn and too other neighbors lawns as well, that will pay
for the new coil which is on it's way.
I guess after 31 years, something is wear out. John
The rubbing on the coil is sticking out past the base. Also replaced bearing in pto,
I didn't like the play in it, seemed to loose.
First time this has been apart, for me
I'm the second owner of this machine.
