Hi, So far my 322 has been a pretty good tractor but now the battery light comes on all the time so I talked to John Deere and he said that it might be the regulator. Well they gave me a regulator but it's different then the original. The new one has a female plug on it and so does my wiring harness. I know I'm not that bright but this dosen't seem right to me. Seems to me in order for this to work I need both a male and female plugs. The parts man (who has been knowen to be wrong plenty of times) said it's a sub for the original and I have to change the wiring. Any truth to this story? Also I would like to get a muffler for it again. My Farmall Cub muffler is just to loud for it. I know a new one from deere is like 220 but thats a lot of money to pay for one. Thats half my paycheck. Is there another option or even something that might be used? Thanks Eric Tenney

Eric,

I have not tried to get a voltage regulator recently from Deere, but the part was originally AM101406 according to the PC2149, and as you noted the part is now being substituted as part M1A881279 on the JDParts site. Check to be certain that the substitution was done correctly at your parts dealer. If it does indeed have the opposite gender connector, that is very disconcerting.

As an alternative, our WFM sponsor Keeping It Green still lists the AM101406 as being in-stock for $86, and that would be the way I would go before changing any part of the wiring harness on either of my two 322 tractors... If all else fails and you must use the new style regulator, I would try making an adapter (a plug-to-plug short cable jumper...) and just add to the stock tractor harness rather than cut into it.

Here is the location of the regulator as shown in the TM1591 -- and of course the harness connector is a female set of sockets while the regulator has matching male pins, at least as this tractor left the factory.

FWIW, I just replaced the voltage regulator on my 322 a couple of weeks ago. At that time, the AM101406 was still available from my local dealer for about $90. In my case, I did have to modify my wiring harness due to melted and brittle connectors, but I used all female terminals that would plugin directly to the stock regulator individually. I am in agreement with Chuck regarding not changing out the harness, but felt that was the best compromise for my situation. If there is not another local Deere dealership close to you I would recommend Keeping It Green as well.

Eric,
I would take it back and have them double check that regulator part number. Funny you say the parts man is known to be wrong! I sent my dad down there to get a belt for my 65 110, I wrote down the part number and price. My dad handed it to him he looked it up said Yep thats right and gave us the wrong belt still.

Off the subject, but do you still know if there are any of them bean buggies for sale? I am helping a guy with a back knock in his 318 and he wants a new engine.

Loren, If Roger is your parts man he will probably give you the wrong thing. I don't care for him much. On the bean buggy thing there all Briggs 18 IC with 1" shafts. I woulden't put one in a 318. I will take the regulator back.
