What oil is in there? Could be the oil is so thick it isn't getting picked up in the suction hose. Also-does the suction hose have the internal spring to prevent it collapsing? Is there any chance the reliefs on top of the pump are pushed in?

Couple other things-is the drive shaft spinning? There is a rubber connection that can fail overtime (mine did last year). You would tend to notice and it wouldn't come back like it is. There is a pin in the pump as well that if it shears it won't pump. But again-it won't come back once in a while. I am thinking this is an oil supply issue. Also-how much oil is in there.

Jd parts shows the rear yoke being splined onto the pump. I was thinking of a pinned connection, but it looks like two bolts #9 clamp it on.

It could be your pick hose collapsing, or you hydro release in the 1/2 way position. Bolt are easier and cheaper to fix.

Sounds like my 420 this fall.

If the fluid is unknown or could have water in it, change that and the filter.

And inspect the suction hose that is on the front of the case that goes up to the pump. Any holes or splits and it will just suck in air.

KB, if the hydro release was the issue the hydraulic lift and steering would still work I would think as they are only for forward and reverse? But maybe it dumps all pressure when they are pushed down?

You could also have a broken pressure relief spring on the pump.

Mike,

Thats what I was thinking at first, but then I looked at the release valves on JD parts and they looked like they are on the pump chamber, not the lower hydrostatic drive section, so I wasn't sure of my thought process, which left them as a possibility to me. My 140 has a loader, so I do not have any tractor to test if all function is lost with the release valves, or just the drive.
