Picked up a pretty nice, low hours 332 a couple of weeks ago. Put the 50" deck on and started mowing. When in a pull, there is a sound like an old butcher's band saw cutting through a rack of ribs. Makes no noise at all when not in a pull or going downhill. It sounds like the noise is coming from up front, but hard to tell because when I stop, the noise stops. Haven't run across this in the past and was wondering if anyone might have a clue?

Thanks,
Mark

Hiya,

I had a 330 that whined loud going uphill and not downhill. I changed the fluid just in case when I got it but just used it. Eventually I got tired of the manual steering and sent it down the road to fund another project. My current 318 has a little whine changing directions but that's it, I got lucky with that one. The 330 had 630 hours and the 318 has 613 hours so it's not dependent on hours.

Check the level, make sure the fluid is good and the filter is recent and run it. Jim's Repair has an FAQ on the Sunstrand rebuilds he does and this is one of the questions. His answer is pretty much the same, some units whine going uphill, run 'em.

Mark,

Also check for a broken or sagged motor mount -- if the engine moves very much under load relative to the shroud on the radiator the fan can rub against it and screech pretty loudly...

I replaced my motor mounts as well as shimmed the rear mounts with a couple washers since they take the most load.

Mark,

If the tips of your fan blade show signs of abrasion, they have been touching that shroud at some time...

This type of noise is loud and is either present or not...hydro whine tends to vary in volume with speed of the engine and load changes.

As Travis said above motor mounts but they are expensive JD list part number AM100443 $58.74. The shimming can be done as a fix by using the washer's that come off your mowing deck blades. they are conical washers and pretty thick. The diameter of the engine mounts threaded portion is 0.394 so any washer with an ID of that would work. I found mine to be rubbing when my frame flexes funny thing is after new mounts it still did it till enough of the fan blade wore off.

regarding motor mounts:

This appears to be a close cross by the dimensions listed:
http://store.solutionsdirectonline....10-ss-55-vibration-isolation-mount-p8977.aspx

Should cost around $7.64 each -- maybe someone that is going to replace their mounts should try these and let the board know...

Hey old thread, but I did use aftermarket mounts:

If anyone else has to replace their motor mounts, please check out JW Winco. It's the same part as above, but I'd recommend purchasing right from JW Winco. They are a Wisconsin company and the mounts are $8 each. You can order them directly through JW Winco. For my 332, I ordered a mount that was 40 mm high and 60 mm in diameter. The diameter is 5-10 mm wider than the stock mount, which hopefully means they will handle the load longer/better.

This is the part line/series: https://www.jwwinco.com/en-us/produ...Mounts-Cylindrical-Type-with-Steel-Components

You want to order it with two threaded studs. There are also different hardness ratings. A durometer rating of 55 is the standard part. I special ordered mine with a durometer rating of 70 (harder) at no extra cost.

The exact part number I ordered for my 332: 351-60-40-M10-SS-70

One comment - the 40mm thickness leaves no room for error, if for some reason it's TOO thick you're out of luck. I think they make a 35mm which you could then shim up with washers.

Anyways, the 40mm has worked perfect for me, I've got some uneven terrain and haven't had any issues with the fan hitting the shroud.

Make sure you readjust your driveshaft/damper afterwards. New mounts change the height of the motor and throw things off.
