I've noticed one of my injectors looks like its leaking. I put a wrench on it and its tight. Can the injector be rebuilt? Is this something I would need to take to a diesel shop, or would this be something I could tackle myself. thanks.

They can be rebuilt. Most likely it will have to be sent out to a diesel shop. We do this with our trucks at work, send them to a place in Albany and get them back good to go. I would imagine it would be pretty simple for them to do and get done quickly. Good luck.

Are you sure it is the injector leaking? From the picture the injector line looks welded? Clean it off and then through some flour around it to and start/watch. See where the leak is actually coming from. FYI-I use starting fluid to clean things as it doesn't ruin rubber. Just make sure it is dry before starting.

thanks adam, any idea what a typical rebuild would cost? Should the injectors be rebuilt as a 'set', or can they be rebuilt 'as needed'?

Travis, I'll have to have a closer look at the line when I clean it up and see what I can find.

Jim,

No need to send this to a diesel shop. You can do this as its an easy fix. If its not leaking at the top, then it is only low pressure fuel leaking and you don't need to have it sent out for rebuild. Usually those return lines crack and leak, or it comes from underneath the circular fitting that the return line attaches to. Under the fitting is an o-ring that can be replaced along with those copper washers you can almost see. Take the fuel line off at both ends-use two wrenches at each fitting to avoid disturbing other o-rings in pump. Unscrew that nut on top of the return fitting, slide off copper washer, fitting, and copper washer. Replace 0-rings and copper washers. You'll probably want to replace the return line, as I mentioned. Its under no pressure, any fuel rated hose will work. Bleed and Voila-saved $200!!

Jim,

Here is a picture:

After seeing this picture, I have to take the statement back about high pressure only leaking at top. I forgot about the joint to the main body to access the pintle. You can see the holes for the low pressure return here. More than likely yours is leaking as I said above.
