The tension spring #22 was broken on the 34 deck that is on the 70 that I'm working on. I got a new spring and it ends up being a variable wire thickness spring(the old one was the same)I found the spring under the head of stove bolt #29 with that being the heavy wire end. Is that correct? The stove bolt #29 has a square that it should fit in on #23. I will have to grind a little off the loop to get it around the bolt body. The other end of the spring appears to go in the large spring #24 slot coming from the bottom. I can't get the bolt #29 out because of a welded bracket on the deck. It's going to be real hard to stretch that spring to get the loop on #29 as the light end must be hooked first the way the spring is made. Anyone have any tips to installing this spring?

I got the spring #22 installed after I got the heavy end of the spring loop ground till it would go around bolt #29. I thought I would have s hard time getting the spring hooked along side of spring #24. I used my needle nose Vice Grips and got it hooked. ! wouldn't have have been out how to route the belt without the parts page assy. drawings.

I'm going to replace the primary belt #18 and the trans-axle belt next. The had a 3/8 belt on it.

Had identical problem with my 34 deck on a JD 100 last year. Had to drive 30 miles to a JD dealer that had one in stock. Guess those springs don't last forever.
However, it did last 34 for years (my 100 is a 1977) so I really can't complain.

Hope your project works out well.
Regards, John Lewis.
