Green Farm Parts is offering to Green Tractor Talk members a 10% discount on parts this Labor Day weekend. That discount plus their usual cheaper price and free shipping means I can save a lot this weekend.

Anyways I thinking about getting a few things including the shock absorber in the control linkage. I just want to be sure the problem I'm having is related to this absorber. From the research I did here, it may be. What the tractor is doing is "lurching" or "jerking" when you put it in reverse or forward. It doesn't have a smooth motion until you get going. Not a smooth take offs at all. So I just need a confirmation on this problem.

Terry,

I am not at all experienced on the older 400 hydro linkage -- but on the open frame tractors if you have 'jerky' ground speed lever response and do NOT have variability of speed on up/down grade with an unmoving lever setting then the primary cause is the dampener. If you experience ground speed variations with load when the lever is not moved, then linkage wear is also indicated.

Army hasn't been posting much lately but you might try sending him an e-mail... He has multiple 400 tractors and would have encountered your symptom by now and likely have some recommendations.

I agree on the good prices on GreenFarmParst.com and the GTT discount makes them great prices. Plus they almost always have free shipping for any order above about $75 so I tend to gather up my parts needs into a single order. They have regular coupon deals for prior customers as well that come in my e-mail periodically...

Terry, How do you get the 10% discount. I have a few things in the cart but don't see anything to connect to GTT.

My 400 has a bit of a jerk when selecting forward or reverse. Once in either it is smooth. I have thought I would attack the linkage wear points first.

Terry, I was just reading a new post on a 430 and it activated a dormant brain cell. Harold Goff pointed out to me once that the 400 was prone to loosen and loose those horizontal side bolts that attach the hydro unit to the frame. Especially the RH side. This would DEFINANTLY cause the symptoms you described.
When Harold pointed this out; I found my left bolt was barely tight and the right was completely gone.
These bolts prevent the trans from rocking up or down as torque is applied from the engine and/or torque resulting from work load and tire traction.

Grab a 3/4'' socket and let me know what you find, cause this post has been buggin me over a week now. later, JZM.

James,
Thanks for the tip. I haven't even put on the little shock absorber yet. I have been working on one of my '66 110s and honestly, ain't been doing much on that as I tweaked my back somehow. But I'll keep you posted.
