Brad if the 400 slid off a trailer at that speed he probably destroyed the hydro pump on the transaxle. It will be an expensive fix. There will be lots of small metal parts through out the hydraulic system from the pump blowing up. Welcome to WFM. Roger

There is also a hydro pump pin that can shear and cause the pump to become inoperable (ie no hydraulic pressure). You can check this by un bolting the hydro pump from the transaxle and checking the pin. Be sure to mark the orientation of the pump before removing to be sure it goes back on correctly.

Meaning...the rear wheels turned?? From what I understand in the manual you are supposed to push the tractor across the shop VERY SLOWLY and only do this once a year. Otherwise one risks blowing apart the hydo pump. you NEVER NEVER NEVER TOW these anywhere. Literal destruction. Essentially that would be what was done from your description.

Not enough information and it looks like Brad has checked out anyway. Happens quite a bit. Somebody new to WFM posts a question, experienced members jump in to lend a hand, and...

I have personal experience with Mike's suggestion. After I bought my first 400 a tree branch knocked the middle lever into float when I was mowing and I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out was wrong with the steering. One of the 400's I bought after that has a bend in the top of the frame, right side, near the back. Doesn't affect anything though. The rockshaft was also bent down about a half inch till I replaced it. No apparent damage to anything else but used replacement parts are readily available. Something violent obviously happened. Falling off a trailer is a possibility. I've seen what can happen first hand. Some years ago I bought a wrecked Cub Cadet at a salvage yard to get the almost new Kohler engine out of it. Just about everything else was smashed into junk. The aluminum hydro transaxle was split open like a pumpkin. All four wheels were bent and the bead on every tire was popped so it must have landed feet first at some point. Would be interesting to see a video of what happened.

>>you NEVER NEVER NEVER TOW these anywhere

Unless the rear end is in neutral. Probably wasn't though.

thanks for all the info. the levers are not stuck.if you have it in hi or low range you can not move it but if you put it in neutral it will roll. with the tractor running and you put it in gear it sounds like it is putting a load on the engine.no we don't have a video. and again thanks for all the help.

Brad,
Maybe, in the bounce off the trailer, the deck pinched off one of the main hydraulic lines. Trace the tube out of the top of the pump to the 3 spool valve then out of that to the steering valve, to the cooler and back into the side of the differential housing. All the fluid goes through the steering valve and those 3/8" hoses with tube ends would be pretty vulnerable to violence caused by the deck flailing.

That is a reasonably good sign that the hi/low range seems to be working. The engine lugging sounds like the pump is trying to work but the internal pressure regulator is dragging the engine some. When I stall the hydraulics on my 400 there is a somewhat noticeable drop in rpm. By your description it may be a supply/return issue and not an individual circuit problem. Jay

sorry it been so long since i posted anything, but finally figured it out. Trashed the pump in it. Put pump out of a 317 rear-end and worked wonderful.
Then mowed with it about 3 hours and the motor went bad. What luck i have. So just got through transplanting a 23 hp briggs vanguard on it, so now
it should be ready to mow.
