Will the 400 starter weight work on the 430 tractor? I know the back is not cut out for the brake hub but is there any other reason it might not fit? I found a set of 400 weights used but not any for my 430. I really need only one because I got one in a package deal.

KB is correct. I had a pair drilled out a few years ago for a case of beer. The pair I had done were very hard and difficult to drill on a lathe.

I'm having trouble deciding to buy 2 400 weights for $200 plus shipping or buy one new one for 187 plus tax. I could try to sell the single that I have. A friend works at a place that let's him use the Bridgeport if he doesn't have other work to do.

Steve,
One of the starter weights on my JD420 is from a JD400 and the backside has not been cut out. There are 50 lb weights on top of the starter weights. The JD 400 weight works OK, but sticks out about 1/2" more due to contact with the axle nut on the JD420--not pretty for a show tractor, but this worker machine could care less.

I would be concerned about the bolts loosening up or the weight shifting around as the wheel spins with that setup. Not a very wide contact patch just using the nut vs the ring on the weights touching the rim.

That or balling up the end of the shaft to the point where it could be a problem if you ever needed to take the nut off.

Hi Mike,
I had the same concerns about weight movement or having a nut come loose. However, the weights have been in use several years with no hint of movement. I think that the 50 lb weight on top of the starter weight makes sufficient rim contact to lock things in place. Now for the condition of the axle end threads...?

I had 400 weights on my 140 I had they were made to fit by cutting a piece of 3/4 ply wood the same diameter outside as a little larger than the ring on the weights and with a hole in the center the same size as the axle nut cover. the backside of the ply wood rested on the lug bolts.

I picked up a set of 400 starters,I want to install on my 316. I'll have them cut for the axle nut,but don't know the hole dimensions. Does anyone have a new style weight, that can measure the diameter and depth of the hole?
