ok ive got the manuals but it doesn't show me the belt adjustment for my 1990 420. how tight is too tight and if your wondering my tension setup is different then the book. book shows it sideways and mine has the hook that pulls it up and holds it.

Tom it sounds like you are looking at the adjustment for the older version. In the OM for SNs 010001- on page 54 it show you how to tighten the belts. Basically tighten the spring until in measures 1.38" is what it says.
