After 3 years of labor, engine kicked over nice but there is only so long one can dump fuel down the carb. Does the fuel system need to be primed, or does it just take forever for the vacuum pump to fill the line, filter, and finally get to the bowl. Any advice would be great.

Have you pulled off the fuel pump output hose to see if it's pumping? The diaphragm might have hardened and not able to pump. You might also try sticking an air hose nozzle in the fuel tank with a rag packed around it and pressurizing the system to push fuel to the pump.

There is quite a bit of fuel line on the machine, will probably take a good 30 seconds of cranking or more to prime it if dry, or if you dump some down the carb and run it, it will go faster but you risk a backfire out the carb.

Also check where your fuel selector valve is set at.

If one of the pickup tubes in the tank is cracked or missing, it might not work on that setting.

I pulled the reserve and main fitting out of the tank and they looked good. I even replaced the flexible hose in the tank, which has the wandering fuel pickup. The fuel line connections were double checked and correct. The pump has two inlet and outlet ports, I'm using the top two and the bottom two are capped off. New vacuum impulse line also, as the entire engine was rebuilt from scratch. Stellar compression.

So as suggested, did you pull the line off the carb and crank the engine over to see if fuel is coming out?

You might try priming the fuel pump itself.
Take off the inlet and outlet hoses, and squirt some fuel into the inlet under enough pressure to make it come out the outlet. Also check that you can push fuel through the outlet hose into the carburetor (check for blockage). Worthwhile to replace those hoses, along with the fuel filter.

Also, if the O-ring is not sealing on the oil dipstick, you won't have enough pulse pressure at the fuel pump. Check that.

Went to prime the pump and that is when I discovered the problem. The new pumps have 2 inlets and 2 outlets. The rubber cap for the lower inlet port was missing, preventing me from pulling vacuum on the tank. Rather than stick a piece of hose plugged with a screw, are these rubber barb caps available at NAPA or somewhere? Need something fuel resistant, other than a standard flimsy vacuum cap.

if its a vacuum port, you don't have to worry about fuel resist

Thanks for the cap offer Jim, but I had already ordered a few online. Cap in place and she is alive. Running great and now it's time to troubleshoot everything before the exterior panels get back on. No leaks, power steering is functional but I read somewhere that the steering cylinder needs to be bled? Also, I noticed my battery light stays on and I could not get the front or rear pto to latch...........although the indicator light comes on? This is a brand new 22F jumbo battery and I'm running the tractor with the transaxle in neutral, with the parking brake on and the seat switch bypassed. Also have the starter relay improvement in place. Original regulator and interlock module are being used, but this is a total rebirth for this 420. Any ideas on the battery light problem and how to bleed the steering cylinder? I'm tempted to get a new aftermarket regulator, but not ready to fork out an interlock.

Thanks to all.

Think I may have just found a "major" problem. My main ground lead from the harness was not connected. This is what happens when you think everything has been gone over. Need to a run a lead with bullet connector from the battery ground cable and see if this rectifies the problem.

We have lift off. 14.1 at the battery, no indicator lights on, front and rear pto functional, hydraulics functioning and no leaks. Time to put it in gear and see if the hydro creep needs adjustment. Do the steering cylinder nuts require torque and how do I bleed the steering cylinder, if required?

thanks

yes those nuts need to be tight or they will come loose

move wheel back n forth lock to lock a few times to bleed it
