Ran when parked...

So my 420 has been in storage since spring. I believe I drove it once since then. Went to move it and drove it around for a big then it lost power steering and lift. Now it barily moves, and when it does it whines and shudders. Seems like the pump is being starved of oil.

Fluid level is fine, hyguard fluid and JD filter.

Little back history. Bought the tractor without an engine, put the Kohler in and as soon as I got it running the front seal on the hydrostat where the driveshaft attaches was puking oil out. So I put a spare pump I had around on, previous condition unknown. It moved but didnt have much hydraulic power. I pulled the detent spring for the pressure relief for the tractor hydraulics out and the one out of the pump I took out and the previous one had a much stronger spring, so I put it in the new pump. Everything worked flawlessly for several years up till now.

It is cool outside, wonder if there could be frozen water in the system? Fluid does not look milky in the site tube, and seem odd that it would work fine for 5 minutes then start acting up. I had a 140 I bought used that when cold it woudnt move for 30 seconds then would. Fresh fluid fixed that problem.

Oil came out of drain plug and I didnt see any obvious holes in the suction tube.

Might try a new filter and some fresh fluid anyways.

I did notice a split in the suction hose up near the top, I think it was compressed by the clamp, but I'm going to get a new one. The spring was in there, so I doubt it was colapsing.

The tractor does still move, so I think the charge pump pin is ok.

Got the filter and fluid today, going to have to order the suction tube.

If that doesn't do it, then the pump is suspect I'm guessing unless you guys have other ideas.

if your suction hose has a crack it will suck air which will slow down the hydraulics

Quote "Seems like the pump is being starved of oil." I think this is the clue.

And Knottyrope is correct. The charge pump cannot build pressure with air like it does with hydraulic fluid. You are getting air in the transmission pump which lowers the pressure that pump has to drive the transmission.

Quote "I did notice a split in the suction hose up near the top" This suggests that the extent of the crack is not visible. and could be the problem.

I do have the hose off, and will order a new one along with putting new fluid and filter on. Hopefully that fixes it up.

Well a full moon was shining tonight...howl...

New suction hose, fluid and filter (and a new sight glass and tube too while I was at it)

IT WORKS! Mounted the blower and weights right away and drove it around for 15 minutes.

Thanks guys, I didnt think it was too serious, and didnt turn out to be. Worse case I would have pulled the pump or whole hydro pump off and replaced with a known good one.

On a 400, its the line I colored in green. Looks like a steel line, but there are fittings and o rings on either end that could possibly be leaking.

Or you could have water in your fluid thats freezing if its doing it only when its cold outside.
