I have a 1983 420 that has been repowered with a P 220 G of unknown age. About 15 years ago I was having starter problems so I pulled the motor and found that the starter face plate/ mounting bracket was broken. This let the starter float around enough that it would not engage the ring gear properly. After buying a couple pieces of junk starters on the internet, I broke down and bought an oem starter. It lasted 15 years but sounds like it has happened again. Have not pulled the motor yet but I am pretty sure what I will find. My question is, has anyone tried repairing or replacing the mounting face plate. The starter still seems strong.
Thanks.......Mark

If I am understanding correctly, it was the starter that broke, not the mounts on the block, is that right? If so, that is an unusual problem. The mounting face plate of the starter should be replaceable from a OEM parts starter.

Yes. As I remember the starter face plate has 2 ears with drilled holes for mounting to the block. On the starter I replaced years ago one of these ears broke and only one was holding the starter to the block. I have a parts catalog .. duh. I will check it out and see if the face plate is replaceable.
